Flight - 4th Annual Collaboration With The Sydney Gallery School
28 September - 9 October, 2010
The next step in the evolution of humankind, surely, will be flight. For too long have we remained stranded upon this endless horizon we call Earth: destined, not to take off, but rather to build higher and higher in the vain hope of one day being able to leap from our constructed worlds and float effortlessly upon the limitless abyss, so inscrutable that it seemed wrong to describe it in terms anything longer than sky.
One place in which the limitations of gravity have found traditional expression is the architecturally defined space of the art gallery. Although art often and necessarily must be fixed to walls and placed stationary upon floors, there has never been a point at which it hasn't sought to leap from these its designated confines, and into this ever-confounding notion of creativity.
It seems appropriate here (especially in relation to our lovely invitation) to make comparisons (you'll see) between the process of creativity and the experience of travel...
In this exciting new presentation, Hardware Gallery plays host to dozens of artists who have engaged with this lofty theme. Students from The Sydney Gallery School, consisting of 40 2nd and 3rd year Printmaking majors, have been feverishly creating new work - the results of which you can see floating on the walls and suspended from the ceiling.
Additionally, Hardware Gallery issued a callout/boarding pass just over a month ago to a group of budding young artists to create works upon the same theme. Having embarked on this journey, we are now able to celebrate the combined fruits of their travels - we have been presented with artworks of imaginative depth and breadth that thoughtfully and playfully connect with this idea of flight - whatever that may be.
In light of the new season, Hardware Gallery celebrates the arrival of the sun, and the safe return of its small but brave flock of winged Icarus impersonators. With their travels concluded, imaginations ignited, luggage unpacked, and gifts bestowed, these promising young artists are ready for the next step in their journey of creative evolution: flight...
