Jo Shand - The Road Goes Ever Onward

9 - 20 August, 2011

Sydney artist Jo Shand arrives at Hardware Gallery from Enmore, via Newtown. Sharing a similar passion and concern for the changing face of the innerwest, Jo has captured enduring moments of the life and streetscape of this culturally vibrant area. Jo's paintings fuse instantly recognisable locations with sometimes forgotten iconic buildings, facades and businesses of the area. The Road Goes Ever Onward is an exhibition that doesn't dwell on or unnecessarily lament change, rather it records location and history.

"Capturing a moment that pauses and is gone, whether in an observance of the slowly decaying streets of the inner west or as the experiences one has in life, moves ever onwards, never to return again to that moment. Time passes, the days move away; we capture what we can.

Indian ink forms the basis of my work, calligraphic brushstrokes executed quickly with the immediacy of acrylic to enhance them, a combination of fast mediums to promote the restless quality of my work."

The exhibition will show simultaneously with paintings by Sydney based artist Clyth Hoult.
